Multi-disciplinary artist Sean Meilak layers personal and collective histories, referencing ancient architecture, set design, as well as modern and postmodern art and design movements in his sculpture, drawing, painting and installations. Interested in the psychology of space, drawing from domestic, public and constructed environments, Meilak’s work combines art history and design, including Surrealism, Italian furniture design and the theatrical environments in cinema.
Born in 1975, Sean Meilak completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1997 and acted as Co-Director and Programme Co-ordinator of 1st Floor Artists’ and Writers’ Space, until 2002. Meilak was a studio artist at 200 Gertrude Street from 2000 to 2002 and in 2006 he undertook an Australia Council residency at the Cité International des Arts in Paris.
Sean Meilak has held numerous solo exhibitions at Niagara Galleries including Marble Park (2017), Portraits (2008) and The way we live today (2003). His exhibition Parade at TDF, curated by The Design Files, presented Meilak’s freestanding and wall sculptures (2018).
Sean Meilak currently lives and works in Melbourne.
