Realm to Realm: Reflections Upon a Drifting Path

A conversation between Dr Sean Lowry and John Young AM on four decades of making art.

Join us to hear Dr Sean Lowry and John Young AM in conversation at ARC One Gallery. Sean is Head of Critical and Theoretical Studies and Associate Director (Research) at VCA, Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, University of Melbourne.  John is one of Australia’s foremost senior contemporary artists, noted for his discursive and deeply scholarly approach that combines innovative contemporary visual art practice with intellectual rigour. John is currently mentoring student Alice Edy, whilst Sean is her Master’s supervisor.

Dr Sean Lowry is an artist, writer, curator and musician. He holds a PhD in Visual Arts from the University of Sydney. Sean has exhibited, performed and published extensively both nationally and internationally. He is also Founder and Executive Director of Project Anywhere, one half (with Ilmar Taimre) of The Ghosts of Nothing and one half (with Kim Donaldson) of Cūrā8.

Born in Hong Kong and since his first exhibition in 1979, John Young AM has had more than 80 solo exhibitions, and four survey exhibitions (including Tarrawarra Museum of Art and Drill Hall Gallery, ANU). His works have been shown in major exhibitions both in Australia and abroad. He has devoted a large part of his four-decade career towards regional development in Asia, and was seminal in establishing the Asian Australian Artists’ Association in 1995, now the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Sydney. He was also made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2020 for significant service to the Visual Arts as a contemporary artist and painter.
